London And so we arrive back in London. Departing from my train, I take my first step back on British soil, with rain hurling down on me, jellied eels in hand and a cockney swagger back in my walk, I smile wide, ah Britannia, how I’ve missed you. My first taste of food writing was via my blog ‘Alex’sfood’, much of the material of which I gathered from eating my way around London. Here I would post restaurant reviews, write recipes and at times rant on food related topics. One...

The cauliflower is an interesting one. It's the type of vegetable from one's childhood; just boiled as an afterthought, left till last on your plate, but forced to eat before leaving the table. As you take a sip of water for Dutch courage you reluctantly nibble away, until the ordeal is over, but an ordeal that has resigned your only remaining memories of the meal to that of the faint sense of bitter cabbage hidden in the form of the evil mushy white broccoli pretender. But the cauliflower has had a revival. You'll be...

So with the reviews bit done, now for something completely different. Well not completely, it'll will of course still be within the food related realm, but I saw a chance at a Python reference and I took it! My top tips to avoiding the touristy, rip off places that ravage the culinary landscape of many cities (too dramatic?) 1) Don’t talk to strange men wearing bow ties As well as being a brilliant life lesson, this tip will also help you steer clear of rubbish restaurants: avoid strange men wearing bow ties....

So I was thinking how despite the name of my blog, a name that would fairly suggest a level of tofu and tempeh based recipes, that I have posted a disappointingly and rather confusing lack of such. To help restore the balance, I come to you with a very fine tofu inspired dish, crispy and golden in its panko shell of which hides the glorious flavour sponge that is tofu within. I give you panko breaded tofu green curry. Enjoy! Panko breaded tofu (serves 2-3) Tofu, 350g Panko, 1/2 cup Brown rice flour, 2 tbsp Non...

And so we arrive at Osteria Francescana, the flamboyant peak to this month of foodie indulgence. Osteria Francescana Via Stella, 22, 41121 Modena MO, Italy Approaching my final week of travel, Osteria Francescana was set to be the crescendo of the trip. Having re-arranged my whole visit to Italy, not to mention keeping a tight check on my student loan during my first year of university (not as to avoid going into overdraft so much, but to pay for this one meal), I was expectant. Nervously excited; nervous because I feared...

To start, I must apologise for the past week where I shamefully neglected my blogging duties. I have let you, my loyal readership down, I have let the good name of tofuandtempeh down and I have let myself down. It's not an exaggeration to say that literally tens of people were affected by this...

Sorry about last week, Travel Tuesdays completely escaped my mind. You see, I was off to see Black Sabbath and my mind clearly couldn't comprehend two such polarising concepts that are food tourism and the occult! But back in Italy for this week. I review one of my most memorable meals from my trip, in part due to the restaurants rather eccentric characters. It was like being in an Italian sitcom, set in a restaurant. Hey, what a great idea, and anyone from the BBC reading, I own copyright to what I call The Italian...

And so we reach the final leg of my journey, two weeks in fabulous Italy. I've decided to divide this into a few parts as, in all honesty, it's a bit long winded! Italy I figured I could roll all of my findings of Italian cuisine into one bumper section, partly because if I'm honest, I’m finding it hard to mentally separate Rome from Venice and Modena from Bologna in terms of food. This might be further evidence of my disorganised methods or sieve-esque memory, but perhaps it’s quite telling of what...

N.B. I began developing this recipe around Christmas time and wrote the introduction to this post at the same time*, therefore please excuse the rather belated festive theme. Oh and merry Christmas of course! *and I'm too lazy to something new! As is becoming tradition now, my parents decided to leave their children (apart from my little sister.. the spoilt little..!) for Christmas/Chanukah and head off somewhere sunny for the holiday period. With my brother preferring to spend Christmas with his girlfriend and her family for the second year running, it was once again but...
