The cauliflower is an interesting one. It's the type of vegetable from one's childhood; just boiled as an afterthought, left till last on your plate, but forced to eat before leaving the table. As you take a sip of water for Dutch courage you reluctantly nibble away, until the ordeal is over, but an ordeal that has resigned your only remaining memories of the meal to that of the faint sense of bitter cabbage hidden in the form of the evil mushy white broccoli pretender. But the cauliflower has had a revival. You'll be...

So I was thinking how despite the name of my blog, a name that would fairly suggest a level of tofu and tempeh based recipes, that I have posted a disappointingly and rather confusing lack of such. To help restore the balance, I come to you with a very fine tofu inspired dish, crispy and golden in its panko shell of which hides the glorious flavour sponge that is tofu within. I give you panko breaded tofu green curry. Enjoy! Panko breaded tofu (serves 2-3) Tofu, 350g Panko, 1/2 cup Brown rice flour, 2 tbsp Non...

I have never really understood steamed vegetables. When I see people serve their dinner with what I have always assumed was just a lazy helping of steamed potatoes and carrots, it just seemed like such a waste to me. Fair enough, steaming is usually the optimum cooking method with regard to retaining nutrients that are often lost during the cooking process, but I always try to strike the balance between optimising both flavour and nutrition. But I wanted to give the steamed vegetable a fair shot, and so sought to come up with...

Oh Falafel, how I love thee. Too long living with the mediocrity that is the shop brought falafel, I thought the time had come to have a go at the art of falafellery (haven't checked, but pretty sure falafellery is in the dictionary) myself. The result as compared to the shop brought pretenders really was chalk and (*cashew) cheese (*being a plant based blog and all that!) Once you bite into the crisp shell to find the pillow of spiced chickpea mixture within, you won't be able to eat...

Well the festive season is approaching, at least if advertising is to be trusted, and for us Jews this means Chanukah (or Hanukah or even Hannukah, no one truly knows!), which like Christmas, of course means remembering the baby Jesus… oops, no it doesn't, I  meant presents. But like Adam Sandler sings in the Chanukah song, the Jewish Christmas surpasses its Christian counterpart because "Instead of one day of presents, we have eight crazy nights'. And yes Adam, Chanukah is indeed a lot of Fun-ukah! P.S. I'm only joking about...

Right, please stay with me on this one, it all comes together in the end! Sort of. Richard Dawkins once predicted a post-armageddon future. One that saw rodents roam the world triumphant in a human-less world. I would suggest alongside a couple of headless cockroaches knocking about as well. To quote Dawkins, "I have a post-Armageddon vision. We and all other large animals are gone. Rodents emerge as the ultimate post-human scavengers. They gnaw their way through New York, London and Tokyo, digesting spilled larders, ghost supermarkets and human corpses and turning...

To call this dish a ratatouille may be to disrespect the long tradition of this wonderful French vegetable dish… but call it a ratatouille I will. I'm a massive rebel, I know. So last weekend I had another mental saturday night planned, what being the party animal that I am, when my parents asked if I'd like to help out with their dinner party that same night. As much as I love getting hammered with the lads and chatting up girls, I thought, perhaps just this once, I'll stay...

Welcome to the first recipe post here at Tofu and Tempeh. Like the 22nd of November 1963 or the 9th of November 1989, I think it's unlikely you'll forget where you were on this historic day! How curious, it seems all the major events of the world fall in November! Anyway, enough nonsense, let's talk borlotti shall we. If there is a more beautiful bean in the world, then I haven't seen it and let me tell you, my pulse consumption is off the charts. They can be hard to come by...
